CDX Shutter Ply: What It Is, Where Itβs Used and Why Itβs a Popular Choice
When you need a plywood product that offers strength, versatility and good value, CDX shutter ply is a popular choice for a wide range of construction and building applications.
At The Timber Yard, we supply timber and board products to builders, contractors, manufacturers and DIY customers. In this guide, we explain what CDX shutter ply is, what the βCDXβ grading means, and where it can be used.
What Is CDX Shutter Ply?
CDX is a type of plywood manufactured by bonding several layers, or veneers, of timber together. The direction of the wood grain is alternated between layers, which gives plywood its strength and stability. The term CDX refers to the grading of the plywood faces:
- C face β A lower-grade face that may contain knots and natural imperfections.
- D face β A lower-grade face with more visible imperfections and repairs.
- X β Indicates that the plywood is manufactured using an exterior-rated adhesive.
Common Uses & Applications
CDX shutter ply is commonly associated with shuttering and concrete formwork. It is also utilized across:
- Construction: Structural lining and general construction sheet requirements.
- Packaging: Constructing sturdy crates and protective industrial boxes.
- Temporary Site Work: Platforms, walls, and protective panels.
Moisture Resistance & Thickness
While the "X" denotes exterior adhesive, it is not fully waterproof and requires sealing if exposed to weather. The correct thickness depends on concrete pressure and loading. We stock commercial sheets optimized for multiple reuses.
